Trainer bikes are an excellent alternative to regular trainers, offering great realism, function and practicality.

Trainer Bikes

Trainer bikes are complete training bikes which offer all the same benefits of a regular trainer and more. They are more popular than ever, now that most major trainer brands have a model in their lineup. Trainer bikes are a great alternative to typical indoor trainers and offer the full riding experience for uncompromising cyclists. Here is a quick overview of the three most popular models.

ANT+/BLE Connectivity

First of all, all the models discussed in this article have ANT+/Bluetooth Smart connectivity, meaning they are fully compatible with all the popular training software such as Zwift, Rouvy, Trainerroad and more. This means all the riding data is communicated wirelessly to your electronic device (iPad, smart phone, computer, etc.) and then all the resistance data (terrain, intervals) is communicated back to the trainer in real time.

Wahoo Kickr Bike

The Wahoo Kickr bike is a unique product, packed with features designed to make indoor riding a more enjoyable experience. The Kickr bike is essentially a Wahoo Kickr trainer, paired with the Wahoo Kickr Climb system, which adjusts the pitch of the bike according to the terrain. This makes for a great riding experience.

The shifters are probably the most realistic and best functioning shifters on modern trainer bikes, as they work very similarly to actual mechanical shifters, with programmable buttons for more riding options. To the right of the handlebars, the LED display shows gearing and there is even a mechanical click when changing gears for more realism.

The Kickr bike has a very large fit window, and will work for riders of most ‘’conventional’’ sizes.

Pros :
- Realistic gear changes
- Kickr Climb
- Large fit window
- Practical app to replicate bike fit
- Can connect to a Wahoo head unit

Cons :
- Only one bottle holder
- No designated phone/tablet holder
- LED display is awkward to look at while riding
- Most expensive of the three

Tacx Neo Bike

While the Tacx Neo Bike is also quite focused on realism, it does so differently than the Kickr Bike. Being essentially a full bike version of the Neo 2T trainer, it shares the same realism features such as road feel and descent simulation. It is the only model to feature integrated fans which is great when the training gets hard. The Neo Bike has customizable shifters like the Kickr bike, albeit not as realistic. That said, the LCD display is much better and very easy to use, replacing the need for a traditional head unit.

The trainer bike is very silent, with the fans actually being louder than the trainer itself. One of the unique features of the Neo Bike is the ability to be used ‘unplugged’. While this does reduce certain functions (road feel, descent simulation), it is practical for training areas with limited outlets.

Pros :
- Road feel and descent simulation- Very clear LCD display
- Can be used without external power
- Fans actually quite useful

Cons :
- Digital feeling shifters
- Disabled functions when used unplugged

Stages SB20

The Stages SB20 is different from the other models, in that it resembles more of a stationary gym bike than a dedicated cycling trainer bike. It is less focused on realism but more on functionality and accuracy. Of the three mentioned brands, Stages has the most experience with trainer bikes.

Stages SB20 offers precise function power readings, thanks to the proven Stages power meter technology. The shifters are more traditional with side buttons, but are still programmable. It features a large fit window, two water bottle holders and a practical tablet holder.

Pros :
- Reliable and minimalist
- Large fit window
- Two bottle holders
- Useful and practical tablet holder

Cons :
- Unrealistic shifters
- Power meter cranks require batteries
- No gearing display

Elite Fuoripista

This is the most unique model in our selection, with its designer looks and minimalist functionality. Elite calls it ‘’sculptural and architectural beauty with remarkable functionality’’. Made from artistically crafted wood, glass and metal, the Fuoripista embodies Italian cycling tradition like no other product.

Made to resemble an old school road bike, it has a large glass fly wheel with leather covered touch points and a wood frame. Elite has even gone as far as to recreate the classic down-tube style shifters. The bike is available in multiple sizes for a perfect fit. This is the ultimate living room furniture piece for passionate cyclists (who aren’t on a budget).

Pros :
- Completely unique design and aesthetic
- Quiet operation
- Can be used unplugged

Cons :
- Financially inaccessible for most
- Size dependant, made to order
- Down tube shifters not the most practical
- Hard to find

Conclusion
