We’ve all had to call on a good samaritan after an unfortunate roadside incident, be it a flat tire or a solid ‘’bonk’’ during a hard group ride. Here is our suggestion of 5 things to check off your list before going on a ride!

1. Tire Pressure

It might seem like an obvious one, but many people ride their tires with pressures much too low, leading to pinch flats, prematurely worn out tires and damaged rims. Air temperature and tire age can greatly affect its capacity to hold air, so make sure to check your tire pressure at least once a week.

2. Do not underestimate hydration

Every cyclist has forgotten their water bottles at some point. We recommend consuming 1L per hour of cycling, with additional electrolyte supplementation and sports nutrition every 90 minutes.

Check out our wide selection of water bottles and our varied offering of sports nutrition.

3. Use shammy cream and sunscreen

For longer rides, shammy cream can help reduce friction from your bib to sensitive areas. That said, shammy cream is not an end solution to discomfort; to find the right saddle check out our blog post on the matter!

Nobody is shielded from UV rays. Sunscreen will both protect your skin and help you work on the much desired cyclist’s tan!

4. A well-fitted helmet

Too many cyclists wear a poorly adjusted helmet when riding, which can lead to serious injury in the case of a fall. We have a wide selection of helmets in stock, to help you choose the right one for you.

We recommend avoiding a helmet with a visor for road cycling, as it will force you to raise your head higher causing neck and back pain.

5. Always carry an emergency kit

In case of trouble a well thought-out emergency kit can get you out of a sticky situation. This kit should include : your phone, cash, food, a CO2 cartridge or mini pump, a spare inner tube and a multi-tool. You can also check out our pre-built kits.

Conclusion

Taking a few minutes before riding will help you ride with peace of mind and maybe even lend a hand to fellow riders. If you have any questions, let us know!
