With all the options on the market right now, it can be hard to choose the right tires and studs for your fat bike. Here is our essential guide to choosing the right option for you and making the most of your winter riding.

How to choose fat bike tires?

First of all, determine the diameter of your fat bike’s wheels. This will either be 26’’ or 27,5’’, depending on the manufacturer. These days, most fat bikes have 27,5’’ wheels. This is due to recent studies showing that 27,5’’ wheels offer better obstacle roll-over, pedaling efficiency and feel similar to a 29’’ MTB. That said, some smaller fat bikes still have 26’’ wheels, as the proportions make more sense.

Next is width. Typically, more narrow tires (3,8’’-4,0’’) have a less aggressive tread designed for low rolling resistance in hardpack conditions. However, fat bike conditions being so variable, it might be a better idea to go for wider tires (4,5’’-5’0’’), for better performance in difficult riding conditions, such as soft snow.

Fat bike tires with or without studs?

One of the best ways to make the most of difficult riding conditions is by using studded tires. Studs dig into ice and soft snow providing more confidence, safety and enjoyment no matter the conditions. However, keep in mind that studded tires may increase rolling resistance.

What are the types of fat bike studs?

Standard Concave Studs : A great choice for commuters. The compact size of these studs provide low rolling resistance and high durability.

Large Concave Studs : These studs offer excellent performance and versatility, making them a great choice for a wide variety of riders.

Concave XL Studs : Concave XL studs are the most aggressive in the series, with a massive contact surface for great traction in turns acceleration and stability.
