These days, there are many indoor training accessories. While they may not all be completely necessary, there are a few key side-purchases you can make which will greatly improve your indoor training experience - a trainer-specific tire is one of them.

What is a trainer tire?

A trainer tire is made from a special type of rubber, typically thicker and more durable, that is designed specifically for use with wheel-on trainers.

What is a wheel-on trainer?

A wheel-on trainer requires the user to keep their wheel on the bike and uses a typical resistance unit and friction system to generate resistance. This is the most common type of indoor bike trainer on the market.

Do you need a trainer tire?

All trainer manufacturers recommend the use of a trainer-specific tire with any model of wheel-on trainer. Regular road tires are not designed to withstand the heat of the friction roller and will wear down much quicker, potentially causing damage to your beloved trainer.

Trainer tires also offer better adherence to your trainer’s roller surface and help greatly reduce slippage when standing on the pedals, sprinting, etc.

Our tips

With the slow season changes in Canada, it can be annoying to change your tire out whenever you want to ride outdoors or indoors. Therefore, we recommend purchasing a second rear wheel with a trainer tire permanently installed, making transitions much more practical.
