With the seemingly endless rise in gas prices, more and more people are resorting to commuting to work by bicycle. While this is cost-effective, it also promotes a healthier lifestyle and can lead to weightloss and improvement in mental health.

The Benefits

With the seemingly endless rise in gas prices, more and more people are resorting to commuting to work by bicycle. While this is cost-effective, it also promotes a healthier lifestyle and can lead to weightloss and improvement in mental health.

Indeed, even experienced cyclists may underestimate the effects of daily riding, even over short distances. The frequency and consistency of commuting by bike provides a definitive and quick physical adaptation, which cannot be had any other way.

Being well prepared is key

Being well prepared is key to a successful commute. We recommend you go on a 'reconnaissance ride' to take note of distance, time and possible obstacles beforehand.

The commute time/distance is a key factore to your preparation. If the commute is more than 30 minutes, you will most likely need to carry a change of clothing and anticipate time for a shower. A good way to prepare for this is to leave some spare clothes at your workplace, even for a few days in order to carry the least amount possible. It is essential to have a small toiletry bag for all-day comfort, as well as a flat kit in case of emergency.

Urban Bikes

What the industry call ''urban bikes'' are often hybrid bikes equipped for commuting. Some hybridbikes come with all the necessary accessories for commuting, such as the Giant Escape 2 City. These are great as they are often lightweight, not too expensive, and offer a great balance of comfort and performance.

E-Bikes

Electric bikes are the new standard for daily commuting. They are a reliable and environmentally-friendly method of transport, which can get you to work in record time without breaking a sweat. While they are often a significant investment, it is one that is quickly cost-effective considering the practically non-existing usage fees, compare to a car.

Most E-bikes come with a 400 or 500wh battery which can provide up to 150km of riding in betwen charges. This opens up new possibilities for commute distance, which are not feasible without assistance.

E-bikes follow the same characteristics as traditional bicycles, but with an electric-assist system. This means urban E-bikes are great for commuting, most of them including all the necessary accessories from day one. Models such as the Trek Verve+ 2 are a perfect choice.

Tires

The right tires offer peace of mind. They will provide superior puncture protection and should be chosen according to the anticipated riding surface. Most urban/commuting tires are designed for both paved asphalt and hardpack gravel, which is what you are most likely to encounter in city environments. The Schwalbe Marathon is the standard in this field. Check out our full selection of hybrid tires.

Rear Rack

While we do try to minimize the gear we carry when commuting, sometimes it is inevitable to have some luggage on-board. A rear rack can help with that, distributing the weight properly and keeping the most natural ride feel possible. We recommend choosing a bike that has one included already, but some models suc as the Bontrager BackRack are quite universally compatible.

Mudguards

While not essential, mudguards are a great addition if you plan on riding in the rain or on wet roads as they keep your bike and clothing that much cleaner after a dirty commute. Once again, we recommend choosing a bike that has some included already but you can check out our wide selection of mugduards here.

Locks

The ideal situation is being able to store your indoors, especially in the case of an e-bike. If not, a good rul of thumb is to choose a lock that is 10% of the value of your ride. Generally, the more expensive the lock, the harder it is to break. It is important to know that locks are not perfect however, and any experienced thief can quickly get through any type of lock. That said, check out our selection of locks

Lights

Many people are not aware that lights are actually required in most cities after the sun sets. They are the absolute best solution for visibility, both during the day and during the night. We recommend choosing Day-Time Running Lights such as the Bontrager Flare/Ion combo, which provide 360 degrees visibility at a distance of almost 400m; this is essential when riding in close-quarters with hundreds of vehicles, day-in day-out. If there is one item on which you should not cheap out, this is it. Check out our full selection of lights
