Bike Brakes

There are several types of brakes used on bicycles, each with its own characteristics and advantages. Here's a description of the most commonly used bike brakes:

Rim Brakes: Rim brakes are the most common on road bikes and urban bikes. They are usually mounted near the wheel rims and are operated by brake levers. They use rubber brake pads that press against the sides of the rim to slow down or stop the wheel's rotation.

Hydraulic Disc Brakes: Increasingly popular, these brakes offer excellent braking power in all weather conditions. They use a steel rotor mounted on the wheel hub, and disc brake calipers equipped with hydraulic pistons to clamp the rotor when the brake levers are activated. They typically require less effort to brake effectively compared to rim brakes.

Mechanical Disc Brakes: These disc brakes function similarly to hydraulic disc brakes but use cables instead of hydraulic pistons to activate the calipers. While they offer good braking power, they may require more maintenance and adjustments than hydraulic brakes.

Coaster Brakes: Also known as coaster brakes, these brakes are commonly used on kids' bikes and Dutch bikes. They are integrated into the rear hub of the wheel and are operated by pedaling backward. They are easy to use but offer limited braking power.

It's important to choose the brake type that best suits your riding style, preferences, and the conditions you plan to ride in.

Brake Pads and Shoes

Bicycles use different types of brake pads and shoes depending on the braking system.

Rim Brake Pads: These are usually made of rubber and designed for rim caliper brakes. They are easy to replace and offer good braking modulation.

Organic Disc Brake Pads: They are composed of organic materials such as resin or kevlar. They offer good modulation, low noise, and minimal disc wear.

Metallic Disc Brake Pads: They are made from metals like copper or steel. They offer high braking power and better heat dissipation but can generate more noise and disc wear.
